Your before-you-file desk check

A practical final review of the form edition, signatures, payments, supporting records and delivery instructions.

Let the actual form instructions lead

USCIS requirements vary by form and reason for filing. Download the current form and read its instructions before using any general checklist. Confirm whether the chosen filing method is available for the request. The points below organize a review; they are not an eligibility test or a complete list of required evidence.

For a paper filing, USCIS warns that missing pages, mixed editions, improper signatures and incorrect fees can cause problems. Keep the form edition and page numbers visible. If you have already filed online, do not send the same form by mail simply to feel more certain.

Keep the evidence legible and the destination correct

USCIS’s mail-filing guidance calls for legible supporting copies and a complete English translation with the required translator certification when documents are in another language. Do not send originals unless the instructions or applicable rules require them. Keep originals safe and identify what was actually included in the submitted package.

Check the mailing destination on the form’s official page, including any attention line and distinctions between delivery services. A request for evidence is different: follow the address and response instructions on that notice, rather than automatically sending a response to the address used for the original application.

Save a private copy of the final package and payment record. Keep courier tracking separate from the agency receipt: delivery information and a substantive agency decision answer different questions. Review any subsequent notice promptly and record its instructions without assuming an online status summary contains everything.

Check the source

Official instructions govern. Review the current source before filing or paying.
